10 Amazing Underwater Mysteries

#1.Stone arrangements that appear similar to Stonehenge (UK) have been discovered around the world, and one of them lies 40 ft. below the surface of Lake Michigan. A team of underwater archaeologists discovered the circular series of stones in 2007. One of the structure’s stones appeared to have a carving of a mastodon on it, which is an animal that has been extinct for over 10,000 years.

#2 Cuba’s Underwater City
In 2001, a series of submerged granite structures was discovered by a company surveying the area off the coast of Cuba. The complex structures observed by sonar imaging have determined it to cover an area of 2 square kilometers. Skeptics believe the series of structures are too deep to be man made (around 2,200 ft.). If the site was manmade, then researchers believe the site would date back to the Maya. Local Yucatecos stories even talk about an ancient island inhabited by their ancestors vanished beneath the sea.

#3 Bimini Structures
Side-scan sonar and sub-bottom profiling were used to map the deep waters west of Bimini. The structures were discovered in 2006 and 2007 and are aligned in the same direction in parallel lines. The site consists of about 50 stone piles and shares similarities to the structures found off the coast of Cuba. The Bimini structures lay 100 ft. below the surface, which dates them around 10,000 BC.

#4 Structure in Lake Macdonald, Ontario
A mysterious stone structure was discovered by divers in 2005 in Eastern Canada’s Lake Macdonald. A massive 1,000 pound elongated rock lies with a flat surface on top of seven smaller baseball-sized rocks. The structure sits on top of a several-thousand pound flat stone near an underwater ledge. Lake Macdonald’s structure was originally believed to have naturally formed, but researchers later discovered it to be man-made after finding the existence of three shims. Researchers suggest the stone structure to be an ancient memorial or landmark.

#5 Japan’s Yonaguni Monument
The massive Yonaguni Monument was discovered off the coast of Japan in 1987, and since then has been a subject of debate between archaeologists and scientists. Skeptics believe that the monument is completely naturally made and that the carvings found on it were actually natural scratches. Supporters claim that the site was naturally made, but that it was later modified by humans. If this theory is true, then the site would have been modified by humans around 10,000 BC.

#6 Baltic Sea Anomaly
The Baltic Sea holds a strange disc-shaped anomaly that has raised a lot of questions. Some people believe the anomaly to be a UFO, but Swedish Explorers were persistent on convincing everyone that it is simply a rock. The anomaly has caused suspicion because the 196 ft. wide rock does not have the usual silt-layer on it that almost all oceanic rocks have. The rock also appears to lie on top of a 26 ft. high pillar and covered by construction lines and boxes. Fishy, right?

#7 Gulf of Khambhat Discovery
During routine sonar studies were being done in May of 2001, the ruins of an ancient city were discovered in the Gulf of Khambhat. The site consists of evenly spaced dwellings, a bath, citadel, granary, and drainage system that pre-date the Indus Valley Civilization. Several artifacts were found during later investigations. Some of the artifacts found include tools made of stone, fossilized bones, wood, and brittle pottery shards, all dated around 7,000 BC.

#8 Mound in the Sea of Galilee
Lying 30 ft. underwater in the Sea of Galilee is a massive circular stone structure made up of basalt rocks. The basalt rocks are stacked in a cone shape that is so large that it is twice as big as Stonehenge (UK). The structure was discovered in 2003 during a sonar survey of the sea. Researchers have determined the structure to have been man-made when the sea had not yet covered the land. After investigating the structure, archaeologists found it to have similar characteristics as ancient burial sites around the world.

#9 Lake Baikal Mystery
In southern Siberia, Lake Baikal is the largest, oldest, and deepest freshwater lake on the planet. The lake is generally covered with ice until June, but in April of 2009 astronauts saw a very large circular area of thinned ice on the southern part of the lake. The astronauts were also stunned to discover a strange feature that divides the lake. It is a mystery how the circular area of thinned ice originated, but the distinct pattern suggests that warmer water rose to the surface. This is very unusual and strange because hydrothermal activity has never been observed over the extremely deep southern portion of the lake.

#10 Google Earth Circular Anomalies
Archaeologists and researchers have documented several circular anomalies that can be found off the coast of Florida, North Carolina, and Belize. The true objective of these anomalies has not yet been determined, but many speculate that they were used as ancient burial mounds. Researchers believe them to have been man-made around 8,000 BC since they have been better preserved than similar mounds that can be found on dry land.
